Abstract

Algeria is one of the richest countries of architectural and urban heritage. It occupies a vast area and is characterized by diversity of climate and topography, which make it an impressive archaeological tourist site. Unique architecture and urbanism abound in the Aures region in eastern Algeria, which drew researchers' attention and attracted fans of art and architecture of all types, including of what has been nationally classified since 1928. The so-called 'Dechra', where human created urban and architectural compositions that fit their needs and natural environment shaping an important transitional point from nomadism to housing stability to be the depart of a deep-rooted ancient civilization, a civilization of Aures in general and of Oued Abdi and Oued Abiod in particular where this type is widespread in dechra, and dechra of tkout in the southern Aures is one of them. Dechra of Tkout with its distinctive local Amazigh architecture, like the rest of Aures, is in danger of disappearing because of the demolition and removal of its original features, rebuilding and several changes at the level of its architectural and urban structure due to lack of protection. It is also witnessing cultural and tourist marginalization to become a forgotten heritage.

Protecting architectural and urban heritage and integrating in into its modern functions is a must, has to be applied as soon as possible to preserve the historical identity and to pass it down to future generations. This heritage is the main driver to promote tourism and improve the economy. This study, on one hand, aims to highlight the specificity of architectural and urban heritage in the dechra of Tkout and the main changes that occurred through descriptive and analysis of this dechra before and after. On the other hand, the study aims at how to protect this distinctive heritage of the Aures region in general and the area of Tkout in particular, and brings it to the fore by providing recommendations about methods and ways of protection and valuation.
