Abstract

Engaging in the service of the Book of Allah-through learning, teaching, authoring, and classifying- is among the most virtuous acts of worship to Allah. Therefore, students of knowledge and scholars of this Ummah have dedicated themselves to this service, seeking to attain His pleasure and to be among those mentioned by Allah in the verse:

"Then We caused to inherit the Book those We have chosen of Our servants; and among them is he who wrongs himself, and among them is he who is moderate, and among them is he who is foremost in good deeds by permission of Allah. That [inheritance] is what is the great bounty." (Surah Fatir: 32)

The forms and manifestations of care and attention toward the Qur'an have varied, leading to the emergence of Qur'anic studies. Scholars of Islam, both in the East and the West, including those from our beloved Algeria, and particularly the region of Tuat, which has long been a center of knowledge, have excelled in this. Touat remains distinguished by its zawiyas (Islamic Scientists) and flourishing Qur'anic institutions, illuminated by the diligent scholars who preserve the educational heritage.

This article highlights some of the efforts and contributions of these notable scholars, especially concerning the Book of Allah. These contributions are reflected in precious works, including studies on the Qur'an and its sciences, such as the accuracy of writing, proper recitation, meticulous memorization, and correct understanding. Additionally, it sheds light on the treasures within manuscript collections, encompassing all aspects such as Qur'anic orthography, Tajweed, Qira'at (various readings), Tafsir (exegesis), Asbab al-Nuzul (reasons for revelation), abrogation and abrogated verses, and the clear and ambiguous verses. These treasures await unveiling to be presented in a contemporary form, benefiting current and future scholars and students—by the will of Allah.

The objectives of this article are:

  • To uncover the exceptional care of Algerian scholars in Qur'anic studies.
  • To highlight examples of their works in various Qur'anic sciences.
  • To understand the methodologies of the scholars of Tuat in teaching the Book of Allah.
  • To explore the rich scientific heritage represented in manuscripts that have yet to be brought to light.
