Abstract

Speech may at times be ambiguous or obscure, making its intended meaning difficult to perceive, or its apparent meanings may overlap, leading to complexity. In such cases, linguistic clues—especially when combined—play a crucial role in clarifying meaning, removing ambiguity, and determining the intended sense of discourse.Among the most important of these clues is contextual appropriateness, particularly in relation to the interpretation of the Qurʾan.

One of the scholars who paid notable attention to employing this contextual clue in Qurʾanic exegesis is the Algerian scholar Imam ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd Ibn Bādīs. This study seeks to highlight his contributions in this field and to examine his exegetical approach through the following question: Did Ibn Bādīs’s use of contextual appropriateness establish a distinctive interpretive method that reveals the meanings and indications of the Qurʾan through a comprehensive contextual perspective? The study concludes that Ibn Bādīs made significant contributions by integrating linguistic analysis with Qurʾanic interpretation. It also shows that Qurʾanic contextual coherence remains a rich and open field for scholarly inquiry, as the meanings of the Qurʾan are continually renewed and its wonders never cease
