A Comprehensive Review of Memory Strategies as a Crucial Component in Establishing Vocabulary Repertoire

This review paper aims to explore the matter of memory as a crucial component in establishing vocabulary repertoire for language mastery. While previous studies claimed for the capacity of humans to learn languages besides their mother tongue, nowadays shift is towards how human cognitive architecture determines the role of memory in learning languages.

In this paper, we focus on memory strategies and their crucial role in saving and retrieving vocabulary while learning like spaced repetition, mnemonics, flashcards and so forth. Therefore, our synthesis indicates that establishing a robust vocabulary repertoire is challenging while learning vocabulary because it stays to be short so that to connect the gap between temporary vocabulary saving to durable mastery. This gap shows how memory strategies are decisive in the process of establishing vocabulary repertoire.

The findings demonstrated that applying memory strategies when teaching vocabulary would be adequate to improve learners’ vocabulary saving and recall.

Finally, this paper offers recommendations for future applications to fuse and to use those divergent strategies and to be adopted while designing syllabus to improve learners’ vocabulary repertoire so that they reach automaticity and fluency.
