Criticism constitutes a fundamental component of all scholarly disciplines, serving to distinguish sound interpretations from unsound ones and to clarify academic value. Qur’anic exegesis (tafsīr) has witnessed extensive critical engagement due to the diversity of interpretive, theological, and juristic perspectives. Among the prominent exegetes in this field is Imam al-Kiyā al-Harrāsī, the author of Aḥkām al-Qur’ān, which forms the focus of this critical study.
Although primarily juristic in orientation, this tafsīr incorporates discussions from the sciences of the Qur’an, linguistic analysis, and the principles of Islamic jurisprudence. Its critical dimension is evident in al-Kiyā al-Harrāsī’s evaluative judgments and methodological preferences grounded in evidence from the Qur’an and the Sunnah. This study aims to clarify the concept of exegetical criticism, highlight key issues critiqued by al-Kiyā al-Harrāsī, and identify the main criteria underlying his critical approach.
