This study aimed to investigate the phenomenon of verbal polysemy in grammatical terminology, taking the term “al-mufrad” (the singular) as a model, since the Arabic language is one of the languages in which this phenomenon is prominent. To achieve this goal, the descriptive-inductive method was used, which is based on tracking the phenomenon to reach conclusions. The paper included three axes: The first axis clarified the concept of verbal polysemy in grammatical terminology; the second axis discussed the concept of the term “al-mufrad” (singular) according to linguists and grammarians; while the third axis traced the term “al-mufrad” across various chapters of Arabic grammar, clarifying its intended meaning in each context.
Among the most important findings of the study: The phenomenon of verbal polysemy exists in grammatical terminology, as a single term can carry multiple meanings. This stems from the nature of the Arabic language, which is characterized by polysemy. The term “al-mufrad” is one of the terms that exhibits this phenomenon. However, despite its multiple meanings, it does not pose a problem, as context plays a crucial role in determining the intended meaning of the term and in eliminating any ambiguity, vagueness, or confusion.
