The topic of this research revolves around the origins and development of the Roman army
from the royal era to the imperial era and its special structure and the methods and
mechanisms adopted for recruitment in the ranks of the Roman army and whether it relied on
the same methods and mechanisms for recruitment inside and outside Rome. Did Rome rely
on conscription on free Roman citizens, or did it recruit other soldiers outside of Roman
affiliation. Did this affect the Roman army’s success in achieving this expansionist military
objectives on the one hand, and on the other hand, was the Roman army outside Rome able to
preserve the gains of the empire, achieve its strategic and expansionary goals, and impose the
Roman character in the areas under it
