The Arab modernist readings are marked with a set of methodological characteristics concerning their readings of religious texts; and perhaps the most important feature that characterizes those readings is that of a rationalistic vision which regards reason as a dominating reference over religious texts hence their excessive neglect of the other sources of knowledge. This essay is an attempt to demonstrate the incoherence of this rationalistic reading of religious texts through the selection of two prominent rationalistic paradigms in the Arab modernism arena: Mohamed Arkoun and Mohammed Abed Al Jabiri
