Abstract

Despite what has been achieved regarding urban development in Algeria, through implementing urban planification policies, establishing rules of construction, reconstruction, and urbanization, enhancing judicial control of illegal environmental administrative decisions to develop the field of housing and urbanism; high and speed population growth accompanied with an increasing housing crisis (among many other socio-economic, environmental problems) have impacted the agricultural field, causing major risks to food security and citizen’s life and human dignity. On an other hand, since the environmental dimension of sustainable development aims at protecting the natural resources necessary for food production (from protecting the soil, protecting the spaces allocated to trees and protecting fisheries), in addition to expaning production to meet the needs of the growing population. In fact, failure in maintaining the natural resources on which agriculture heavily depends, such as agricultural soil spaces, will certainly cause future food shortages and threaten national food security. The close interdependence among urbanization, food security and sustainable development can not be underestimated any more.
