Abstract

This research paper deals with the concept of the unspoken, as it is mainly concerned with understanding its meaning by highlighting its main types, i.e. both the assumed and implicit pattern and the test of the degree of conversational implicitness that distinguishes the first from the second. It was also found that context has a fundamental - and even decisive - role in the process of interpretation, as it is the reference by which determining all the rhetorical requirements, whatever they may be, and the explanatory in the result as well. This study, which does not claim to be fully aware of the total meaning of the silent, came to examine the diversity of discursive indicative contents in its two basic forms (presumed and implicit) by focusing on the relationship between context and implication and its role in determining the meaning of the silence. To do this, we adopted an analytical illustrative method that relies on a set of projective examples and illustrative schemes to allow achieving the general objective of the study.
