Abstract

The Arabic language is the most influential language on the culture and social life of the Africans long time ago and up to the recent time. It played a significant role in the training of the people of Africa both intellectually and mentally. It is also a language which saves their past, present and concentrates on building their future .These and other meaningful reasons made people to concentrate on its study and write about its significance. But a great number of the writers have not written on Open and Distance learning most especially on Arabic language as a programme. This is so because of the newness of the programme in the history of Nigeria Education. The writer therefore is using this medium to submit his own contribution on the subject matter and to expose Arabic readers to the position and status of Arabic language in the Islamic world of which Nigeria is inclusive. The paper emphasizes much about the Arabic in the past and those who have written on it and have spelled out issues about open and distance learning together with its evolution and development in Nigerian content. Some suggestions are singled out on how to improve the teaching and learning of Arabic for the betterment of the language and its speakers
