Abstract

The aim of this study is to uncover the extent to which Mahmoud Darwish relied—like all poets—on expressing his ideas through means of imagery and symbolism and convey his messages to the reader in his poem ‘In Praise of the High Shadow’ -Madih Adhil Alali-. It is observable that Mahmoud Darwish employed his rather vast knowledge of the intellectual and literary heritage of many historical eras and of different cultures. The latter indicates that the reader must be armed with knowledge of those cultures in order to fully grasp the meaning of Darwish’s works. We have, indeed, seen the manifestation of metaphors and symbolism within the described situations; whether in an imagery of wrath, sadness, or sarcasm. This confirms the depth of the poetic experience and the dynamic nature of the poet’s consciousness in relation to the dynamic nature of the Palestinian resistance—which he lived through its many phases, especially the battle of Beirut and the emergence of the resistance from Lebanon. And that is precisely the subject of the poem ‘In Praise of the High Shadow’.
